BJP president Amit Shah on Monday came down heavily on the Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi over alleged injustice to Gujarat leaders during Congress rules in the State since Independence.

Shah was addressing a rally at Porbandar before flagging off the Gujarat Gaurav Yatra — a 15-day campaign across 149 Assembly constituencies by his party.

“The Congress is asking us what the Narendra Modi government at the Centre has given Gujarat in these three years,” Shah said.

‘ “I want to remind them that the Modi government approved AIIMS for Gujarat, an international airport for Rajkot, approval to raise the height of the Narmada dam and allocation of homes to six lakh urban poor. However, Rahul could not see any of this. Rahul can’t see it because he is wearing Italian glasses. To be able to see the development, he needs to remove those spectacles and wear Gujarati glasses.”

Shah added that all through its rule since Independence, the Congress has meted out injustice to the leaders from Gujarat, be it Sardar Patel, Morarji Desai or Modi. “The Congress is daydreaming to come to power in Gujarat. If you ask for votes after ignoring Gujarat for three generations, you are not going to get it,” he said.

The BJP launched Gujarat Gaurav Yatra as a response to the Congress’s ‘Navsarjan Yatra’, which garnered impressive support from the rural population in Saurashtra during Rahul’s three-day stay in the region.

Commenting on the BJP’s Yatra, Manish Doshi, Congress spokesperson, said: “These people (BJP) are frightened by the rise of Congress support. We and the people of Gujarat ask BJP — what kind of gaurav (pride) do they speak of? Their yatra is a one-way communication to the voters, while Rahul Gandhi’s yatra is a two-way communication with the people on ground.”

As part of its campaign, the BJP launched a rath yatra from Karamsad, Anand, the birthplace of Sardar Patel, on Sunday.

The second rath yatra started its journey today, and will travel a distance of 2,395 km covering 73 Assembly seats in Saurashtra and south Gujarat. It will conclude on October 15.
