At the verge of making governments in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and with a comfortable majority in Chhattisgarh, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said the Opposition is “uniformly united” and fight together in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. He said 2014 results gave a lesson for him that politicians should be humble and they must hear what people say.

He credited the victory to Congress workers, farmers, youth and small business owners. “This is a big responsibility on the Congress. We will now provide a vision for these States,” he said, adding that the party will form government in the three States. He said the narrative for the 2019 election will be based on three central issues such as addressing unemployment, farmers’ distress and corruption.

Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said the PM is unable to take the pressure from the Opposition. He urged the Prime Minister to address issues such as unemployment immediately.

Loan waiver

He said the Congress will immediately start the process of waiving off loans in States where it has won. He said Modi refused to listen to farmers and youth. “Certain amount of arrogance came in and that is fatal for politicians,” he said.

He said the central question there is how does our country will give jobs to millions of youth. “The Prime Minister did not fulfil the promise of providing jobs. Youth are disappointed. There is a same sense among farmers. There is a sense of discontentment, inability to see the future, inability to see how they are going to survive and thrive in the field of agriculture and I think that has had a big impact (on the results). We are going to work in these State to give a vision, to give a future,” he said.

He said with the resurgent Congress and the combined Opposition, it is going to be very difficult for the Prime Minister and the BJP to win the elections. “That is a pretty clear. This is a clear message to the Prime Minister and the BJP that the country is not happy with what they are doing. The country is not happy with demonetisation, the GST and the lack of jobs,” he said.

He said the Congress is engaged in an internal dialogue to develop a vision for the country.

“The central issues will be unemployment and farmers’ issues. These are national issue. We will have to give a new vision for the country,” he said.
