Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who virtually launched the ruling Congress-led coalition’s electioneering for the Assembly election at a public meeting at Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday, claimed the Oommen Chandy Government had kept all promises given to the people.

Gandhi, who opened the meeting that marked the five-week long Congress rally led by State party president V.M. Sudheeran, praised the government for its people-friendly policies. He pointed out that the Chandy government had balanced pro-economic growth policies and pro-poor programmes. It was the first government in the entire country that had come out with a policy for startup enterprises.

He also said the Congress would not compromise on corruption and that it would take `immediate and strict’ action if there is a little evidence of corruption.

Gandhi asked the Left Democratic Front to explain to the people of Kerala as to what its policy regarding liquor was. He said Communism was an obsolete ideology. “I want to tell the Communists that their ideology is that of the last century,” he asserted.

Coming down heavily on the Narendra Modi Government, Gandhi said it had forgotten the need for a balance between economic growth and common people’s welfare. He alleged that the BJP government had scrapped several people-friendly schemes of the previous government such as the rural job guarantee scheme, food security scheme and the Right to Information Act.

Referring to the suicide of a Dalit student at Hyderabad, Gandhi said it was not just a question of caste, but the fact that India’s youth was being crushed by the BJP government.

An surprisingly large crowd gathered at the Shanghumugham seafront to listen to Rahul Gandhi and senior State leaders at the culmination of V.M. Sudheeran’s rally which had begun at Kasaragod on January 4.

Gandhi is expected to discuss with senior leaders of the Congress and the UDF the strategies for the Assembly election. He will address a meeting of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee at Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday morning and will also meet several party groups.
