The Union Government has decided to grant permission to set up 12 centres for research-oriented studies in Tamil Nadu, School Education Minister K A Sengottaiyan has said.

Speaking at a function here today, he said, “The Union Government has decided to grant permission to set up 12 centres in Tamil Nadu to teach research-oriented studies on atomic energy and other science subjects and only select candidates would be admitted.”

“We have requested the Union Government to grant more such centres at least one in each Assembly segment,” he said.

Later, the Minister distributed free laptops to 2,286 students in the district.

“The State Government’s ambition is to make Tamil Nadu the number one State in school education in the country, for which already more than Rs 26,000 crore has been sanctioned in the State Budget,” he said.

He said 3,000 smart class rooms will be started in government schools during the current academic year and it would be increased to 10,000 next year.

On the performance of students appearing for class 10, 12 board exams, the minister said approximately ten per cent of them failed in some subjects. To help such students who fail, special classes would be conducted in December, he said.

Besides, proper coaching will be given to students who have completed class 12 to appear for competitive exams held by the Centre, Sengottaiyan said.
