Will the use of robotic surgery techniques improve treatment of certain type of cancers and patients suffering from gynaecology related problems?

Yes says Nam Kim a leading expert in the area from the Severance Robotic Institute, South Korea.

In recent years robotic surgery has brought the benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIOS) to more than 30 lakh patients worldwide. This has changed the experience of surgery for the patients, felt several doctors participating in an international Live workshop focused on cancers, organised by the Yashoda Group of Hospitals here.

Credited with performing the highest number of colo-rectal surgeries using robotic techniques, Kim said the MIOS has gained substantial ground in Korea and India has the potential too. Between 2006-2016 a total of 50,000 MIOS were performed in Korea alone.

The Yashoda Hospital has established an Institute of Robotic Sciences. “For surgeries of colon, esophagus, uterus and thyroid cancers Robotic surgery is the best. The patient will be able to go home faster and resume normal life much earlier,” says Jagdishwer Goud, organising secretary of the event and clinical director of the Institute.

For doctors and the medical team the use of robotic surgery enables operation from a comfortable position, which reduces their fatigue during lengthy procedures.

So far robotic surgery was available only in developed countries that too at an exorbitance cost, now it is here in the capital. “ It demands heavy investment to buy equipment for MIOS and big heart to offer its services at cost an Indian can afford.” said Narasaiah Goud, MP and himelf a surgeon.

He assured that the Telangana Rastra Samithi Government has a clear vision of developing Hyderabad as Medical Hub of the country and will support efforts in this direction. With Yashoda Hospitals efforts the city can become a major centre for Robotic surgeries in the country, he hoped. The Hospitals Managing Director, GS Rao said the objective was to make available MIOS to as many surgeons as possible so that the benefits can percolate to the needy patients. Though MIOS is slightly expensive compared to laproscopy, by 2020 it will be comparable to it and will be widely used.
