Sankara Nethralaya, the not-for-profit, super speciality hospital for ophthalmic care, will soon apply artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques in treating various eye diseases.
Addressing the dedication ceremony of BR Barwale Center for Ophthalmic Technology and Innovation, SS Badrinath, Founder, Sankara Nethralaya, said the Center will apply artificial intelligence technology for early diagnosis of diabetic retino pathology and machine learning in predicting cataract development. Connectivity has levelled the field in technology and innovation helps to carry forward the benefit.
Sankara Ratna Award
Coinciding with the dedication ceremony, Sankara Nethralaya also gave away the annual awards -- Sankara Ratna Award to Deepak Parekh, Chairman, HDFC Ltd; and the MS Subbulakshmi Award to Vani Jairam, the well known singer.
The awards were presented by AM Naik, Group Chairman, L&T.
KS Vasan, Managing Director, Sankara Nethralaya, said plans are under consideration for establishing a SN University.
In his acceptance speech, Parekh said it is important for corporates to create social value. “Doctors should consider their talent a responsibility,” he said.
Commending Sankara Nethralaya for its service in healthcare, he said the institution’s focus on research, academic orientation and specialisation were its strengths.
Naik recalled his more than three-decade relationship with Badrinath and the hospital when he had come to Chennai for eye treatment. He is now hoping to convince Sankara Nethralaya to set up a hospital in Navsari, South Gujarat, his home town, Naik said.
