The South Central Railway (SCR) will be running 500 special trains for ensuing Krishna Pushkaras in August and is spending ₹32.68 crore on execution of various works to improve amenities for the pilgrims.
It will also deploy 2,000 additional coaches. This was disclosed by Ravindra Gupta, General Manager, SCR at a press conference to announce various activities taken up the zone in the last two years held here on Wednesday.
“Though the main focus of the pilgrims will be on Vijayawada, we are gearing up to face rush in Krishna Canal Junction, Gunadala, Rayanapadu Madhuranagar and Gadwal among others stations,” Gupta said.
Various works such as erection of additional passenger sheds at nine stations, three new escalators in Vijajayawada station, foot over-bridges, train indicators and additional booking counters are under progress with an expenditure of ₹32 crore. Out of this, ₹29 crore is earmarked for Andhra Pradesh.
An exclusive officer on special duty will be appointed to over see Pushkaram matters, the general manager said. According to Andhra Pradesh government estimates, 2.67 lakh passengers per day will travel by train for Pushkarams and on peak days it might even go up to 5 lakh per day.
