Senior Kapu leader and former minister Mudragada Padmanabham, leading an agitation for including the Kapu caste in the backward class list, was placed under house arrest on Tuesday evening. The Kapu leader was arrested at his house at Kirlampudi village in East Godavari district.
He was about to step into his car and leave on a "padayatra" for his cause. The police told him that his proposed "padayatra" did not have permission and, as prohibitory orders under Section 144 were in force, he should not leave his house for 48 hours.
Padmanabham asked the police whether he could go on his padayatra after the period, to which query the police replied that it would depend on the situation then.
Pamanabham condemned his house arrest and said he would undertake the padayatra whenever the police lifted the house arrest order.
