Italy’s Consul General in Kolkata, Cesare Bieller, is on an unusual mission. The diplomat, who assumed his present responsibility last October, wants to find out why an MoU signed in February 2007 by the Government of West Bengal, the Italian Trade Commission and the Council of Leather Exports remains unimplemented till today.
The then Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi oversaw the signing of the MoU for a grant of €1 million for the setting up of a leather technology and tanning training centre at Bantala Leather Complex here.
The diplomat at a recent FIEO event said the non-implementation of the project kept Italian market inaccessible for the Kolkata units.
