A group of small tea growers in the Nilgiris is gearing up to showcase the special variety they cultivate at the forthcoming Global Investors Meet (GIM) in Chennai.
The variety includes handmade tea, green and white tea and Oolong tea among others.
HN Sivan, Founder and Chairman of Nilgiris Tea Development Foundation said the participation at the GIM would help the community get good mileage for speciality tea from the hill district, as also help explore newer international markets for such tea.
Sivan incidentally had showcased these teas at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2015 at Gandhinagar early this year.
The community, he says has been marketing such teas through different channels including expos, highlighting the medicinal and health aspects of these teas.
“We have been voicing concern to governmental bodies including Tea Board over not getting a remunerative price for the green leaf and sought support for promoting Micro and Mini Speciality Tea Factories in various tea clusters in the Nilgiris.
“The Board has come out with new norms for regulating the Micro and Mini Speciality Tea Factories, including 40 per cent subsidy support for each project of the small growers who produce 25 kg to 500 kg of Made Teas from their own green tea leaves.
“This would go a long way in transforming the lives of the small tea growers and make it a sustainable proposition.
“The market for this segment of teas is growing at 40 per cent year-on-year,” Sivan told Business Line.
