The Tamil Nadu government will float tenders for 37 projects estimated at ₹1,795 crore under the smart city scheme by the end of this month. Schemes for drinking water, sewerage and storm water drains will be prioritised, according to an official press release .

Another 119 schemes worth ₹11,134 crore are under detail planning stage, the release stated. The plans are the part of 173 schemes under the Centre’s Smart City Mission programme in 10 cities in the State at the expense of ₹13,425 crore. Three projects worth ₹3.65 crore have been completed and works for 14 projects are under way.

Under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme, the State government will float tender worth ₹1,823 crore for 145 projects, which include parks, sewerage and drinking water. A drinking project worth ₹1079.89 crore to increase capacity of 150 MLD to Nemmeli plant is also in the pipeline. Detailed planning for projects worth ₹3,505.97 crore is under way. Around 33 cities, including 12 corporations, 15 municipalities and one panchayat union, in Tamil Nadu are under AMRUT, which aims to improve quality of life by improving basic infrastructure such as drinking water, building pedestrian platforms and proper drainage system.

A budget of ₹11,489 crore was allocated for the 428 schemes in 33 cities with the timeframe of five years from 2015. This includes 18 drinking water projects, 18 drainage schemes and 392 parks. So far, 186 projects – 10 drinking water projects, five sewerage tanks and 171 parks – are under development. Cities with population over 10 lakh will get a subsidy of 33.33 per cent and towns with less than 10 lakh population will get a subsidy of 50 per cent under AMRUT.
