Standardisation of medical care, especially in cardiac disease and diabetes, across the healthcare system can bring down the cost of treatment, according to V.A. Subramanian, ex-director of surgery, Lenox Hill Hospital, New York.
He was speaking at a workshop on advanced cardiac techniques and technologies in surgery, organised by the Apollo Hospitals here.
Companies manufacturing devices should offer different cost structure for South Asian countries, he said adding that the Government also should regulate the cost of devices being imported.
"The plus point for India is volumes it can offer, so the government should make the companies know that they can sell devices here but should reduce the prices due to the volume advantage,’’ he said.
While observing that India has huge incidence of cardiac disease and diabetes, the expert said early detection and prevention was the way forward for the country to gain control over this burden.
The two-day workshop which ended on Sunday demonstrated latest surgical techniques and technologies in the field of cardio thoracic surgery related to cardiac valve procedures and mini thoracotomy, among others.
It also organised a “Live-In-Box” workshop, where pre-recorded advanced cardiac surgeries were demonstrated.
