The Congress has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop using foreign platforms for political purposes.

The party has further threatened to send its spokespersons abroad to counter Modi’s allegations. Stop visiting foreign countries as an RSS pracharak , it told the Prime Minister.

What has irked the opposition party is Modi’s comments in Canada on Thursday that his government has been left cleaning up the mess created by previous governments. Senior Congress spokesperson and former minister Anand Sharma said Modi should apologise for the comments.

“The Prime Minister should apologise. We have honoured the convention so far. The Prime Minister should realise that he goes abroad as the Prime Minister of the country and not as a pracharak of the BJP and RSS,” he said.

Sharma said such comments show the “sick mentality” of Modi. “He has again broken the tradition of not taking domestic politics abroad and has again made malicious attacks on previous governments. We cannot tolerate such unbecoming behaviour any longer. Henceforth, if he again does so on foreign soil, a Congress leader or spokesman will be present there and will respond immediately,” he added.

Lowering dignity

Citing the Prime Minister’s comment that India was known for its scams when he took charge, Sharma said Modi lowered the dignity of his office. “He can even mislead Obama. That he has done,” he said. The Congress has been accusing the Modi government of taking credit for the diplomatic efforts of the Manmohan Singh government.
