Sumalatha, wife of late Kannada actor Ambareesh, filed her nomination papers as an independent candidate from Mandya Lok Sabha constituency on Wednesday.

Accompanied by son Abhishek and a few others, she filed her papers before the Deputy Commissioner, Mandya.

Soon after filing papers the Ambareesh Abhimani Sangha , took Sumalatha and Kannada film actors Yesh and Darshan out on a massive public rally from the Deputy Commissioner’s office to Silver Jubilee Park in Mandya town.

It may be tough battle for late film actor’s wife, as she has to face a challenge by another film actor and son of Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy, who is to contest as Janata Dal Secular (JDS) candidate.

Sumalatha’s decision to contest as independent comes as Congress party declined her a ticket to contest in Mandya. But it went out to support the JDS candidate as part of the pre-poll alliance.

At today’s public rally in Mandya, what was glaring is the large presence of disgruntled Congress and JDS party workers. They participated in the rally and expressed solidarity with Sumalatha. The Congress and JDS workers were seen waving party flag and were visible in the procession prominently along with green shawl waving Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) workers.

The Ambareesh Abhimani Sangha members had mobilised several leaders from the Dalit, Adivasi and minority communities along with farmers from all the assembly segments of Mandya Lok Sabha constituency. Along the procession route, songs from Ambareesh’s films were played. As part of the procession, fans took out a bike rally as a show of strength.
