A majority of citizens feel optimistic about the next four years of the Narendra Modi-led government, but they also feel the Centre’s commitment to fight corruption has reduced. These are the findings of a survey conducted by a community media social network, www.localcircles.com , on the performance of the Centre’s first year in charge.

The survey, conducted among 25,000 online users, says 87 per cent of Indians feel positive about the next four years of the Centre’s rule and adds that 68 per cent felt a positive impact on the ground in its first year.

While 78 per cent feel the Narendra Modi-led government is making systemic changes to improve governance and citizen services, people are not very convinced about its initiative to fight corruption, ensure safety of women and tackle communalism.

The survey, with eight questions, also revealed that only 47 per cent believe that corruption has reduced in the last one year.

Also, only 56 per cent think that the government is effective in handling issues of communalism, while just 18 per cent believe their MP is engaged in addressing the issues plaguing the constituency.

“Interestingly, some ratings including engagement of the MP with constituency were similar indicating that the MPs despite the findings from the 100 day survey, have not engaged more effectively at the constituency level,” the report of the website on the survey findings said.

The website had identified in an earlier poll that fighting corruption and addressing women’s safety as the two top priorities of the government. The third priority was energising and empowering bureaucracy to deliver on the big promises made by the government in 2014.

Citizen rating of the Centre’s commitment towards fighting corruption has dropped from 61 per cent to 47 per cent since the last survey. “Strong actions remain to be seen on all these fronts,” the survey said.

To conduct this poll, LocalCircles invited over 7,50,000 members and non-members across India to vote via different social media channels.
