Tamil Nadu was one of the States mentioned by the Finance Minister in his Budget speech for setting up an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital; the Madurai-based Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce has rushed to point out that a similar promise was made earlier, back in 2009.
“It was announced in 2009 that AIIMS would come up on a 385-acre government land at Thoppur, near Madurai,” notes the Chamber’s Senior President S Rethinavelu.
In a letter to the State’s Chief Minister requesting him to recommend Thoppur for setting up the AIIMS, Rethinavelu stresses that several speciality hospitals, including one super speciality government hospital at Omandurar estate, exist in and around Chennai.
“However, people in the southern districts are deprived of such modern medical facilities,” he says.
He also points out that Thoppur is close to the Madurai airport — a boon for patients.
