The winter session of Telangana Legislative Assembly and Council began on a stormy note with the police detaining scores of Congress activists at different parts of the city on Friday.
Congress workers organised a rally from Gandhi Bhavan to the Assembly as part of the Chalo Assembly call given by the party to protest “anti-farmer policies” of the government.
They tried to barge onto the Assembly premises, resulting in commotion, and arrests.
A huge posse of police was stationed around the Assembly building and at several places in the city. The other Opposition parties, Telugu Desam and Bharatiya Janata Party, also held protest marches.
The police arrested Pradesh Congress Committee President N Uttam Kumar Reddy and shifted him to Madannpet police station.
The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) government has decided to hold the session for 50 days to outwit the Opposition.
BJP leader Kishan Reddy said that all parties were not given equal opportunity to talk in the Assembly. It was wrong on the part of the government to muffle the Opposition voices, he said.
The session will resume on Monday.
