D Srinivas, a veteran Congress leader who joined the Telangana Rastra Samithi (TRS), a few months ago, has been appointed special advisor to the Telangana Government.

He has been given responsibilities of inter-State affairs and rank of a Cabinet minister. The tenure will initially be for a year, an official announcement said here on Friday.

Dharmapuri Srinivas, twice served as President of the Pradesh Congress Committee of undivided Andhra Pradesh.

Hailing from Nizamabad district, he is considered a political heavyweight, though he has been unsuccessful at the hustings in recent times, even losing the latest elections to the legislative Assembly from his home district in 2014.

Srinivas is among a long list of leaders, including sitting legislators from the Congress and Telugu Desam Party who have made a beeline to the ruling TRS in the State. The party, which won 63 seats in the 119 member legislative assembly had reportedly launched ‘Akarshan’ to attract members from other parties and bolster its numbers.

In the last one year, nearly 18 legislators have defected to its ranks. One key leader of the TDP in Hyderabad, Talasani Srinivasa Yadav, has even been made a minister with the important Commercial Taxes portfolio. The issue has raised a political controversy in the State.
