The Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is set to commission a 400 kv substation in Suryapet, thereby further strengthening the State's transmission network.

This substation is part of the larger plan to ensure 24x7 power supply to the farm sector in the State, where the power utilities are investing about Rs 12,610 crore. The substation has been set up as a part of the Rs 1,600 crore investment.

D Prabhakar Rao, Chairman and Managing Director of TS Transco, outlined the State plans to strengthen the transmission network towards the larger plan of ensuring 24x7 power to the farm sector and growing demand from other sectors.

After the State was formed in June 2014, it began its journey with a deficit of 2000 mw. However, due to concerted effort, uninterrupted power was supplied to the domestic, commercial and industry sectors while ensuring 9 hour supply to the farm sector.

The State utilities took up the development of several major substations required to evacuated about 4000 mw.

Apart from development of these substations, the evacuation line has also been further strengthened and increased to 19,916 km up from 16,379 km.

Rao in a statement explained plans have been formulated based on the demand for the increasing demand for power supply in the State.

Rao said the peak demand as on date was about 9,600 mw, and the demand is likely to go up by about 50 per cent if there is 24x7 power supply to the farm sector, for lift irrigation schemes, Mission Bhagiratha and for projected increase in demand from the industrial sector.

In tune with the requirement, both the generation capacity has been increased and is further being augmented apart from strengthening the transmission network.

The commissioning of couple of major inter-State links have also added to the State's ability to source power from other surplus States when required. A regional arrangement has been made for sharing of excess power at short notice.
