Retailers in Telangana can open their shops throughout the year. The Retailers Association of India (RAI) has said that the State Government had issued a notification, exempting retail establishments from weekly closure norm.
The notification, however, asks the establishments to give a weekly off for the employees and restrict work hours to nine hours a day and no more than 48 hours a week. The shops and Establishments Act mandates the retailers to close the concern for a day in week. “Our delegation met Telangana Chief Minister and held series of meetings with the Industries Secretary and asked them to make an exemption to the norm in the Act,” the association said in a statement on Wednesday. Terming the move pro-industry, RAI Chief Executive Officer Kumar Rajagopalan said that it factored in the needs of the growing retail industry in India.
“The exemption from weekly closure will not only be beneficial for retailers to achieve their true potential but will also offer consumers the luxury of 365 days of shopping. In addition, this decision will also help the state economy by creating more employment in the sector,” he pointed out.
