British Deputy High Commissioner, Jeremy Pilmore-Bedford, said that they are working with the Tamil Nadu government to support the Electric Vehicle (EV) plan for the state.

Speaking at the Chennai TechFest, an event organised by the British Deputy High Commission and TiE Chennai, he said the Transport Minister and Secretary from Tamil Nadu visited the Transport of London and few of the EV companies in the UK this September.

“We are planning to bring a delegation of UK corporate officials with expertise in EVs to Chennai in January,” Pilmore-Bedford added.

The Deputy High Commissioner also commented that the UK is undergoing a start-up revolution, similar to India. This has resulted in the UK having one in every three tech unicorns from Europe.

“A staggering 31 per cent of Indian investments in the UK are in the technology sector and that is responsible for 30,000 jobs in UK, “ Pilmore-Bedford said.

Dr. Santosh Babu, Secretary to Government, Information Technology Department, Tamil Nadu, listed out various business-friendly measures taken by the state government. Speaking on the occasion, he said the ecosystem for start-ups looks bright in the state.

The Chennai event is part of a series of events organised across different cities as a preview to the 'India-UK FutureTech Festival' to be held in New Delhi on December 12.

Future Tech Festival (FTF) is a thought-leadership summit that brings together leaders, policy-makers, venture capitalists and entrepreneurs from both the countries to explore investment opportunities in the field of technology and to mentor emerging entrepreneurs and start-up companies.

The festival was initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Theresa May during the former’s visit to the country in April this year.
