Madurai-headquartered Velammal Medical College Hospital and Research Institute is planning to invest another ₹100 crore to strengthen its infrastructural facilities.

The three-and-a-half year old hospital, located on the Madurai-Tuticorin Ring Road at Anuppanadi in Madurai, has since emerged as a public health landmark.

The investment in the first phase of development is said to be of the order of ₹700 crore.

Further investment at this juncture is towards strengthening multi-speciality facilities, said MV Muthuramalingam, Chairman of Velammal Educational Trust.

Claiming the 2,100-bed hospital to be the single largest facility outside Chennai (notwithstanding Manipal Hospitals), he said the super-speciality hospital would provide easy access to healthcare for patients in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, as also countries around peninsular India.

Spread over 136 acres, , the facility includes 550 centrally air-conditioned rooms, 19 fully equipped modular theatres, Cath Labs, MRI and CT scan among others.

While two of the five-floor hospital is up and running, Asokan, Vice-Chairman, said that the rest would be ready before the end of 2016. The daily patient registration, which was around 50+ at the beginning, has surged to over 1,300.

“A majority of patients are poor and from rural pockets. Theyare given treatment from consultation to bed, food, medicine, investigation, delivery, for free. That does not mean we impose a hefty charge on the rest. Our vision is to provide all medical facilities under one roof – free for the poor and at affordable cost for the other sections of the society,” Muthuramalingam said.

“We recently got the approval for starting a nursing college. We plan to offer a degree programme in nursing as also a diploma,” the Chairman said.
