The West Bengal Government is likely to grant interest subventions for loans to the tea industry from a Rs 100-crore corpus.
The corpus was set up by the State Government under provisions of an legislation passed earlier this year.
The West Bengal Tea Plantation Employees Welfare Fund Bill 2015, passed by the Legislative Assembly earlier this year, will ensure welfare and provision of basic amenities for tea plantation workers in the State. The Bill also provides for interest subventions and soft loans to mitigate costs on tea estate housing, medical facilities, sanitation etc.
The decision to grant interest subventions was taken at a meeting between a Group of Ministers, headed by the Finance Minister, Amit Mitra, and the tea industry associations.
The CCPA will soon be submitting a roadmap for the revival of the tea industry to the State Government, it said in a press release.
According to the release, “Discussions centered around the failing health of the industry and the Government’s positive interventions at reviving the industry.''
CCPA has also sought the Government’s assistance in introducing NRHM (National Rural Health Mission) schemes in tea estates, diversification of land use for alternate crops, tourism and rationalisation of power tariff.
