Super Airport Infrastructure India Ltd today said construction work on the country’s first fully private greenfield airport here is scheduled to commence in May.
It has obtained all necessary clearances from regulatory agencies, including permission from the Civil Aviation Ministry and a no-objection certificate from the Puducherry Government, company Chairman J.V. Chowdhary said.
Super Airport Infrastructure has proposed to set up the airport in about 526 acres and has already acquired 300 acres for the first phase of the project, which involves construction of a 1.8-km runway and a 250 peak hour passenger capacity terminal.
In the first phase, aircraft of the type of regional jets and Boeing 737 could land and in the next phase, when it is expanded with a 3-km runway, bigger aircraft could land, he said.
The company expects that the airport would initially attract about 550 inbound and outbound passengers daily. About 12 flights (to and fro) could be operated daily. Over the years, the number of passengers could touch even 4,000 per day.
The company plans to complete the Rs 60-crore first phase of the project by November, he said, adding that Karaikal would immediately gain air connectivity with Chennai, Tiruchi, Bangalore, Kochi, Goa, Mumbai and New Delhi.
