India needs to focus on basic sciences and research to strengthen its journey towards becoming a knowledge economy, said Shashi Tharoor, Minister of State for Human Resources Development. He said this while inaugurating a national workshop-cum-colloquium on applicable mathematics in basic science, education and research here. The three-day event is being organised by the Srinivasa Ramanuja Institute for Basic Sciences, Kottayam, in collaboration with DST Centre for Mathematical Sciences under the aegis of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment. V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, executive vice-president of the State Council, said that a firm footing in sciences required mathematical prowess.
