CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury has moved a privilege motion against Power Minister Piyush Goyal for “misleading” the Rajya Sabha. Yechury said the Minister told the Upper House in November that the decision to demonetise high-value notes was taken by the board of the RBI, while the RBI said in a statement to the Parliament Standing Committee on Finance that the decision was taken as per the direction of the Finance Ministry.
He said in the notice of privilege motion, submitted to the Secretary General of Rajya Sabha, that the government caused breach of privilege by misleading the House and the nation that the demonetisation decision was taken by the RBI.
“This exposes the bluff of the government that this was an RBI decision. The RBI was pressured to endorse this decision. This is a clear breach of privilege,” Yechury added.
As per rules, the Chairman of the Upper House forwards such notices to the Privilege Committee after assessing their merits.
