Well-known scientist Lalji Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Banaras Hindu University, has been selected for the prestigious Y. Nayudamma Memorial Award for 2012.
Lalji Singh has been chosen for the award for his outstanding contribution to life sciences and in recognition of his efforts to establish DNA fingerprinting as a tool for both fundamental research and commercial and societal applications.
A former director of Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, his works on DNA fingerprinting in crime detection, paternity suits and for trying to unravel the migration, antiquity and link of the Andaman-Nicobar tribes to mainland India have been path-breaking.
The award was instituted by the Y. Nayudamma Memorial Trust, Tenali (Andhra Pradesh) in 1986 to commemorate distinguished scientist and renowned leather technologist Y. Nayudamma.
Announcing the award in a media release, P. Vishnu Murthy, founder and managing trustee of the Trust, said the award would be conferred on Lalji Singh at a special function to be held at Tenali, the native town of Nayudamma, on February 16, 2013.
Lalji will receive the award from Nadendla Manohar, Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He will deliver the 21st memorial lecture on the theme, “Mystery of Our Origins”.
