There is need to address grid stability issues in the wake of increasing injection of renewable power into the grid, felt Vikram Kapur, Principal Secretary – Energy, Government of Tamil Nadu.

Research organisations and stakeholders should tackle this, including drawing from experiences elsewhere that use forecasting methods, he said while addressing a CII Conference on Green Power here.

He stated that it would viable for states such as Tamil Nadu to invest in more renewables.

“At times, we are supplying 20 per cent of the power from renewable sources. So, addition of any further renewable power into the grid can cause stability issues,” he said.

He also highlighted the storage solutions being proposed. “A couple of solutions merit serious consideration. We have already been working on pumped storage model and we could also look at thermal storage solutions.”

In Tidel Park, the air-conditioning load is partly met through thermal storage. Given that increasingly a lot of power is used for air-conditioning in buildings, companies in this line can suggest large-scale solutions, he added.

Kapur also felt the proposal of regional grid would augur well in the context of generation of renewable power. “We could have a hybrid system of wind and hydro on a regional basis that can actually provide stability,” he said.

Ramesh Kymal , Chairman, RE Council, CII-Godrej GBC, said certain key steps need to be taken by the government to achieve capacity addition targets in renewables. They include all-round reforms in open access system to promote installations even in remote areas, cutting down payment delays, power evacuation.
