The Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) here is producing torpedoes, decoys and fire control systems, some of which are being considered for export, according to NSTL Director C. Durga Malleswar.

He was speaking in the NSTL here on the occasion of the National Technology Day programme on Monday. He said India had missed out on a few earlier revolutions that changed the world but should now seize the opportunity to build on engineering automation, nano, micro electric mechanical systems (MEMS) and 3D printing technologies.

He said the country missed the industrial revolution and semi-conductor revolution with no capacity to manufacture semi-conductor devices.

In automation engineering technology also it had weaknesses, he said, citing the example ISKCON seeking technology from Switzerland for cooking for a very large number of people at its facilities at Nellore and Hyderabad. The country should not mind spending around Rs.500 crore to train about 100 engineers in design automation technology in Switzerland and automation.

Malleswar presented to Scientist C of NSTL K. Srikanth the Titanium medal and citation for his paper on “Estimation of radar cross section reduction of corner reflectors with orthogonality errors.”

Director of IIT, Bhubaneswar, R V Raj Kumar delivered a talk on “An OFDM underwater communication system for AUV” and former Director General of Electronics and Communication Systems, DRDO, S. S. Sundaram on “Futuristic defence technologies developed by DRDO.”

Chairman of National Technology Day celebration Ch V Satya Srinivas spoke on the significance of the day.
