The Indian Beverages Association, which represents industry players, including PepsiCo India and Coca-Cola India, has said retailers in Tamil Nadu stand to lose ₹400 crore with the ban imposed on carbonated drinks Coca-Cola and Pepsi by the traders’ association in the State.
The association has condemned the boycott in a press release that stated that the two products manufactured by Hindustan Coca-Cola and PepsiCo India are sold by over two lakh retailers. The sale of these products are worth ₹400 crore. The companies also sustain the interests of thousands of Tamil Nadu farmers by procuring their produce. These two companies employ 2,000 families directly and 15,000 indirectly through their extensive supply chain, the association said.
Tamil Nadu witnessed one of the biggest youth movements starting January 17 against the Supreme Court ban on jallikattu. While the protest largely focussed on the sport, there was simultaneously a call to boycott products such as carbonated drinks. Consequently, trade associations in the State decided to ban the sale of Coca- Cola and Pepsi in retail outlets starting March 1.
