It has been a hat trick of successes for defence scientists in the launch test of the guided Pinaka weapons system.

Within 48 hours, the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully demonstrated the system in the Pokhran ranges of Rajasthan. After two trials on Monday, the third was carried out this afternoon.

The short range, guided Pinaka weapon system is equipped with a state-of-the-art guidance kit comprising an advanced navigation and control system.

The weapon system impacted the intended targets with high precision and achieved desired accuracies in all the missions. Telemetry Systems tracked and monitored the vehicle through the flight path. All the mission objectives have been met, the Defence Ministry said.

The indigenously developed Guided Pinaka is expected to boost the artillery’s ability to achieve precision hits.

The challenge so far has been customising the guidance kit to fit into the existing launch systems. With these trials, that has been overcome, experts feel. Now, the guided Pinaka can be launched from the available launchers.

The unique feature of the Pinaka versions tested is the integrated avionics system; it consists of an on-board mission computer, miniaturised navigation system and telemetry.

The existing Pinaka systems held in the inventory of the Indian defence runs into thousands of numbers. The new guidance system will benefit them.
