Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy has given iPhones and other gifts worth ₹1 lakh each to about 40 of the State’s MPs ahead of crucial talks with the Centre over the Cauvery water issue.
There were many murmurs over the ‘gift’, and State Irrigation Minister DK Shivakumar stepped in to quell the controversy, claiming that he had in fact funded the purchase from his personal fund.
BJP leader and MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar was quick to criticise the CM.
In a letter addressed to Kumaraswamy, released to the media, Chandrasekhar wrote: “On one hand you claim austerity measures and we all know Pourakarmikas in Bengaluru are not being paid salaries...
“My conscience does not permit me to accept this and with due respect to you, I am sending this phone back to you.”
