The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has identified three locations for its proposed satellite township project on the outskirts of Kolkata.

According to Vivek Bharadwaj, Chief Executive Officer, KMDA, of the five proposed satellite townships to be completed by 2025; land has been identified at Baruipur (28 km south of Kolkata), Chandannagar (45 km north of the city) and Barrackpore (26 km north of Kolkata).

“Work on the Baruipur project has begun. KMDA is awaiting the State Government’s approval for the plots zeroed-in at Barrackpore and Chnadannagar,” Bharadwaj told reporters while addressing a press conference to announce a three-day exhibition on urban development, Bengal Builds.

Bharadwaj, however, did not specify the amount of land required for these projects.

To be held between November 29 and December 1, Bengal Builds will be organised jointly by KMDA, West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd, Asansol Durgapur Development Authority, Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority, West Bengal Handicrafts Development Corporation in association with Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association of India (CREDAI), Bengal.

It will conduct seminar on issues such as vision and challenges of urban infrastructure development, affordable housing, social infrastructure and creation of sustainable infrastructure.

Financial hub

Meanwhile, State Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said he will meet with bankers in London to seek proposed investments for its financial hub located in the eastern fringes of the city.

To be spread over 25 acres, this hub will be exclusively for foreign banks. The State already has one financial hub at Rajarhat which is for Indian banks and financial institutions.

Hakim said he would be accompanied by representatives of the state urban development department to London on November 15 for an “informal meeting with bankers”.

His team will also attend a seminar on urban re-generation in London.
