A noted Kannada filmmaker has said that the movies in the regional languages portray the real global cinema, and Hollywood movies are lacking in cultural diversity.

Speaking at the inauguration of the regional language film festival in Mangaluru on Friday, Nagatihalli Chandrashekar, Chairman of the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy and Kannada movie director, said the nativity of the movie is discussed in film festivals across the world.

Hollywood movies, which lack cultural diversity and nativity, are increasingly focusing on science fiction these days, he said.

Stating that India produces more movies than Hollywood, Chandrashekar said the diversity of Indian culture is seen in different regional language movies. Each region and each language in the country has its own story to tell. Movies in the regional languages portray the real global cinema, he said.

Urging movie producers to focus on the quality of the content, he said the production of good movies at low cost is important. Investment in the regional language movies should be based on the market for them. Producers should not go forward without looking at the quality and the market for the movie.

Quality of content

Stressing the need for quality of the content, Rishabh Shetty, producer and director of the recent Kannada hit movie Sarakari Hiriya Prathamika Shale Kasaragodu, Koduge Ramanna Rai , said a big-budget mega movie can be a ‘small movie’ before the audience if they don’t like it. In the same way, a movie with limited investment can become a hit if it becomes successful in providing quality content to the moviegoers, he said.

Shivadhwaj Shetty, producer and director of Tulu and Kannada movies, said the lack of exhibition infrastructure is affecting some of the movies in the regional languages. Giving the example of movies in Kodava language, he said there is no proper exhibition infrastructure to screen Kodava movies in Kodagu.

Such a trend is leading to the decline in the production of movies in that language, he said.

The three-day regional language film festival is being jointly organised by Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy, the Karnataka Department of Information and Public Relation, and St Aloysius College, in Mangaluru.
