Delhi-based Roposo - TV by the People, a social mobile platform where users can share video content and connect with people, is betting on regional language platforms to drive its growth.

The company recently launched platforms in eight languages — Hindi, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati, Kannada, Bengali and Punjabi. In an interaction with BusinessLine , Mayank Bhangadia, Founder, Roposo, said similar platforms in Malayalam, Assamese, Bhojpuri and Haryanvi are scheduled to be launched in the next four months.

The company is also planning to strengthen its presence in different States and is in talks to raise more funds. Currently Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru and Mumbai are the five cities where its users are concentrated. So far $21 million has been invested in the company.

Roposo, which was launched in 2014, started as a social network for fashion. In 2017 it pivoted into a ‘TV by the People’. It has 25 channels ranging from sports to cooking. There are eight million users and hosts close to 60,000 posts per day.

Initially, 85 per cent of the content on the platform was in English. “English content now accounts for only 35 per cent. By 2018 end, we expect 80 per cent of our content to be in regional languages,” Bhangadia said. This was the reason for launching regional platforms, he added.

Apart from content sharing, Roposo also allows users to sell products by paying a subscription fee of $200 per annum through its Bazaar channel. There are close to 30,000 sellers currently on the platform. This is one of the revenue streams, he said.

Another revenue source is through advertisements. Bhangadia explained that with millions accessing content in Roposo, they were able to create a ‘taste graph’, which companies can use for targeted advertising.
