Four-time Lok Sabha MP from Karnataka, DV Sadananda Gowda, was Minister of Statistics and Programme Implementation in the outgoing NDA-II government, besides serving brief spells in the Law and Railways ministries. A lawyer by profession, Gowda was Karnataka Chief Minister for a brief while, in 2011-12, when BS Yeddyurappa quit over corruption charges.
Gowda, who sought re-election from the Bengaluru North Parliamentary constituency this year, defeated the Congress’ promising young leader Krishna Byregowda by over 1,47,000 votes.
Born in 1953, he graduated in science and subsequently read law, practising as an advocate before take the plunge into politics in 1983. He was active in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the Jana Sangh. He was also a Karnataka MLA for two terms from 1994.
The ever-smiling Gowda attracted some criticism when, in 2015, he gifted his son Karthik Gowda and his wife an Audi as a wedding gift.
