Noted defence and space scientists, Avinash Chander and Ranganath R Navalgund respectively have been selected winners of the Aryabhata, ASI and ASI-ISRO and Space Gold Medal awards for the years 2012 and 2013. The awards given by the Astronautical Society of India (ASI) consists of a citation and Rs 1 lakh in cash.

Avinash Chander, the former Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister and Director-General of DRDO has been conferred the Aryabhata Award for his lifetime contributions to Aeronautics and Astronautics in India. He is regarded as the Chief architect of long range missiles and steered the maiden three missions of ICBM Agni 5.

Ranganath R Navalgund is Vikram Sarabhai Distinguished Professor.

The ASI also announced awards to P P Mohanlal of ISRO and BHVS Narayan Murthy of RCI for rocket and related technologies awards for 2012 and 2013 respectively.

The Aryabhata Award, which is named after the fifth century Indian Astronomer and Mathematician and also in commemoration of the first Indian Satellite, Aryabhata, launched on April 19, 1975, is presented annually to an individual for outstanding lifetime contribution to the promotion of astronautics in India.
