Using animals to test the toxicity of chemicals may soon become outdated, thanks to scientists who have developed a low-cost, high-speed algorithm to test the safety of drugs.
Toxicity testing is vital to the safety of millions of workers in various industries, according to researchers from the Rutgers University in the US.
The researchers have developed a first-of-its-kind algorithm that automatically extracts data from PubChem, a database of information on millions of chemicals. The algorithm compares chemical fragments from tested compounds with those of untested compounds, and uses multiple mathematical methods to evaluate their similarities and differences to predict an untested chemical’s toxicity.
