The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) will launch at least 10 balloons for scientific research during November to April, said Suneel Kumar, scientist in charge of the Balloon Facility here.
The balloons are made of twin (polyethylene) plastic films, ranging in diameters from 50 m to 85 m. They are expected to reach heights between 30 km and 42 km, depending on the experiments being undertaken.
The instruments fitted to the balloons will be kept at these heights for periods ranging up to 10 hours before being released from the balloon. The instruments will come down on parachutes that may land 200 to 350 km away from Hyderabad.
According to a press release, the balloon drifts will be on the Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad and Sholapur areas of Andhra Pradesh, North Karnataka and Maharashtra.
The TIFR has appealed to people to contact them if they find the equipment (address is printed on the instruments package) and those who do so will be suitably rewarded.
