Distinguished defence scientist, Shashi Bala Singh, has taken over as the Director of National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Hyderabad.

The steering committee of NIPER had appointed him in June. Shashi Bala had retired as Director-General (Life Sciences), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), on May 31.

In addition to several research achievements, including 170 research papers and 27 patents, she has the distinction of being the first woman Director of a DRDO lab, that too the Defence Institute of High Altitude Research in Leh during 2007-10.

Using translational research, her team work has helped in improving the life of troops at high altitudes. Various technologies/products like oxygen-enrichment facilities, Sourja (solar shelter), Bukhari, and Alocal (anti frost-bite cream) were improved.

She has been instrumental in customising various yoga packages for high altitude and hot desert. Her work been led to technology transfer of 10 products which are under commercial production.

NIPER, Hyderabad is one of the 7 set up by the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers which offers post-graduate courses and undertakes research projects. Some of the others are in Mohali, Ahmedabad and Rae Bareli. The Ministry plans to set up 10 more in future.
