The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has selected Shillong, capital of Meghalaya, as the 100th Smart City. With this, the total proposed investment in the final 100 under the Smart Cities Mission is now ₹2,05,018 crore.
The Smart Cities Mission was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015.
The first list of 20 Smart Cities came out in January 2016.
The next set was announced in May that year, adding 13 cities to the mission.
Twenty-seven cities made it to the third list, announced in September 2016, and 30 in June 2017.
This year nine more cities were added.
