The Shirady ghat stretch of the National Highway 75 will be opened for vehicular traffic by July 5, according to HD Revanna, Karnataka Minister for Public Works Department.

Shirady ghat, which connects Mangaluru with Bengaluru, has been closed for vehicular traffic to lay concrete road in some stretches of the ghat section.

Addressing presspersons in Mangaluru on Tuesday, Revanna said that the major works related to the road concreting have been completed. Still around four-five days of work is pending on that stretch. After that, it requires another 10 days for curing. He said the stretch would be open for vehicular traffic by July 5.

Stating that there is a need to upgrade the condition of the road on the Charmady ghat stretch, he said the upgradation requires an investment of around ₹250 crore. The State government will send a detailed estimate on it to the Centre, he said. Charmady ghat connects Dakshina Kannada district with Chikmagaluru district.

Earlier, Harish Poonja, Member of Legislative Assembly from Belthangady constituency, told a review meeting conducted by the Minister that Charmady ghat has been under severe pressure following the closure of Shirady ghat section. Steps should be taken to develop Shishila-Byrapura and Didupe-Samse roads that connect Dakshina Kannada with Chikmagaluru to ease the pressure on Charmady ghat road, he said.

Revanna said steps have been initiated to fill the potholes in the roads in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi on a priority basis.
