The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would like to be a “beacon” for other sports administration bodies, Vinod Rai, chief of the Committee of Administrators and former CAG said.

According to him, BCCI is amongst the well-run sports bodies despite the criticism it has drawn over the last two-to-three years.

“We would like the BCCI to be a beacon for other sports and sports administration bodies,” he said during an interactive session organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce.

Instead of a “jugaad” (a colloquial usage which means low-cost solutions) mind-set; a professional approach is a must. “We have just become satisfied with mediocrity,” he said.

For Rai, attempts are on to get a model in place by which the sports body will be “self sustaining in the future”.

“We cannot deny that the BCCI was a good entity and has been self sustaining. All that we have to now do is get a model in place that will ensure that the administrative body remains self sustaining in the future,” he said.

According to the former bureaucrat, the Board is also in talks to have a IPL-type league with women cricketers. “We have set up a committee and in another two-to-three months a report is expected based on which further action will be taken,” Rai maintained. ‘
