A Malaysian cybersecurity official on Tuesday warned the public about malicious software, or malware, that has proliferated during the Brazil World Cup, aimed at stealing data from unsuspecting users.
The fake apps “contain SMS stealers as well as remote control capabilities that allow the attacker to execute commands on the victim’s devices including sending SMS, reading contacts or installing additional malicious apps,” said Amirudin Abdul Wahab, head of government-backed agency CyberSecurity Malaysia.
He said the malware was usually found in third-party apps that are installed on smartphones to monitor events related to the Brazil World Cup.
“We are continuously monitoring any incoming reports that may relate to the event,” Amirudin told dpa.
International Internet security company Trend Micro said last month it had detected more than 375 malicious World Cup apps.
