The 2014 Pune racing season kicks off on July 24, and with 28 racing days, will extend till Oct 26.

The prize money payout during this monsoon racing season is expected to be around Rs 11.5 crore not including sweepstakes, and is the highest for a monsoon racing centre in India.

The newest development at the Pune racecourse is the conversion of the entire race track into a 2377 m monsoon track with proper cambering.

The 2014 season features sponsored/graded race on virtually every weekend, and 20 races including The Nanoli Stud Pune Derby and the Indian St Leger (the season’s only two Grade 1 races) will carry minimum prize money of Rs 1 million (Rs 10 lakh).

While the Derby weekend will also feature the Oktoberfest, for the fifth year running, the season will be marked with a full calendar of events covering theatre, music and food, Vivek Jain, Chairman, Royal Western India Turf Club said.

Pune has also attracted the highest number of international sponsorships of all racing clubs in India with Irish Thoroughbred Marketing, Goffs, Coolmore Stud, K Club, Connolly’s Red Mills, Thoroughbred Remedies Manufacturing and Tattersalls all sponsoring races.

The season will conclude with Irish Race Day, Jain added.
