Foreign Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will meet her Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York this month.
“I can confirm that on the request of the Pakistani side, a meeting between the External Affairs Minister and Pakistani foreign minister will take place on the sidelines of UNGA at a mutually convenient date and time,” MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said at a press briefing on Thursday.
India, however, maintained that what was agreed to was a meeting and not a dialogue.
"The agenda for the meeting is not ready yet. Let us wait for the meeting to happen first," Kumar said when asked if the meeting would lead to a dialogue.
The last meeting between the foreign ministers of India and Pakistan took place in December 2015.
No bilateral talks took place between the two countries following the skirmish in Uri in 2016.
The month-end meeting could lay the base for India's relationship with Pakistan under the new leadership with Imran Khan at the helm.
