In a novel initiative, turmeric is being transported by rail from Nizamabad in Telangana to Benapole in Bangladesh . The freight rake of 2,474 tonnes was loaded on Sunday.
Nizamabad and its surrounding areas are known for turmeric cultivation. So far, the turmeric produced from the fields were transported by road to Bangladesh, which is expensive and time-consuming.
Gajanan Mallya, General Manager, SCR, advised consignors transporting agricultural products to utilise rail transport which is a safer and cheaper option.
The Commercial Department of the Hyderabad Division took the lead and met all the customers and explained the advantages of freight loading by rail.
With the support extended by the Railways, freight customers in and around Nizamabad area are now showing interest to increase transportation by rail to Bangladesh.
