Hundreds of tenant farmers and those practising shift (podu) cultivation have organised a road blockade in some parts of Telangana, protesting against their exclusion from the Rythu Bandhu scheme. This has led to arrest in some places.
Under the scheme, farmers in the State will get a financial assistance of ₹4,000 an acre each in Kharif and Rabi seasons. It, however, excluded tenant and shift cultivation farmers.
A group of protesting farmers stopped the convoy of Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari and Finance Minister Eatala Rajendar at Machhapur in Warangal Rural district.
“The benefits of Rythu Bandhu scheme should go to the real cultivators and not to absentee landlords. Farmers should get remunerative prices for their produce,” Pasya Padma of Telangana State Farmers’ Association said in a statement on Thursday.
“A good number of farmers that committed suicide are tenant farmers. They need financial support but part of the Rythu Bandhu money is going to those who are not involved in farm activities,” Sayanna of Telangana Rythanga Samithi said.
