Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister P Thangamani has said that more than 6,000 MW of thermal projects are expected to go on stream from 2020-21.

Thangamani met Union Coal Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday and sought fuel allocation for the thermal projects in the State that are expected to go on stream in the next two years, according to an official release.

Memorandum submitted

The minister, along with officials of the State Power Department, submitted a memorandum seeking coal for six projects with a total capacity of about 6,360 MW that are getting ready for generation from 2020-21.

The projects include North Chennai Thermal Power Station Stage-III (1x800 MW), Uppur Thermal Power Project (2x800 MW), Udangudi Thermal Power Project Stage I (2x660MW), Ennore SEZ Thermal Power Project (2x660 MW) and ETPS Expansion Thermal Power Project (1x660 MW) and Ennore Replacement Thermal Power Project (1x660 MW).

Estimated total cost for these projects is pegged at more than ₹50,000 crore.

Thermal capacity

Tamil Nadu’s thermal power capacity was 4,320 MW as of March 31, 2018.

The State government had already made a request to increase coal supplies to 20 rakes a day in order to maintain a higher level ofl inventory in view of the monsoon season.

Thangamani also met Union Power Minister RK Singh and made a plea for the restoration of its share of 6,312 MW from the Central Generating Stations.

Kudankulam maintenance

Now, the State is getting only 3,376 MW of the total share from Central units. He also requested the Centre to consider taking up maintenance works at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Station during May-September when the State can manage the power shortfall due to availability of wind power.

The State’s power capacity is about 18,000 MW, including the share from the Central pool, and power purchases, in the conventional segment.

The total installed capacity in the renewable sector is 11,113 MW, including 8,150 MW of wind, as of March 31, 2018

Tamil Nadu’s average power demand is estimated at 14,800 MW and the maximum demand of 15,440 MW was met during April this year. Chennai had an all-time high demand of 3,386 MW during May.
