There was a 13 per cent growth in the number of Indians taking vacations abroad in 2017-18, according to a report released by global timeshare firm RCI on Wednesday.

The report, which studied holiday and vacation patterns of 50,000 RCI members in India, found that the US was the most preferred destination in 2017-18 while for those headed for Europe, Switzerland and Spain were the top choices.

Among the South-East Asian countries, the top picks were Indonesia and Malaysia, the report said.

“The Indian traveller is constantly evolving and seeking enriching and exploratory experiences. With increased disposable income, factors like cheaper airfares and low tariffs for budget hotels, international travel plans have seen an exponential rise amongst the general Indian traveller. This helps us to tap an opportunity for helping our members get great experiences and memories with their family and friends,” said Sabina Chopra, Managing Director, RCI India.

Domestic travel

The vacation firm also reported an 8 per cent growth in domestic travel, with Goa being the preferred choice in 2017-18, followed by Coorg and Munnar.

“A huge pattern that has emerged is that Indian RCI members are opting to travel international, to newer destinations like Greece, Mexico and Finland. This report will help us to track their vacation patterns, guaranteeing that our contributions are synchronised with their evolving travel needs,” said Aruna Jathar, Director, Marketing and Operations, RCI India.
